World AIDS Day Rally & Keynote
About this Event
Join us for our World AIDS Day Remembrance Ceremony and AIDS Walk.
Our Observance Program begins after the AIDS Walk, and features Dr. Ada Stewart. The theme is ONE WORLD, ONE FIGHT.
From 11am to 2pm, we will rally around the State House North Grounds to complete a Walk, four laps around the Statehouse grounds (approximately 1 mile). Wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
About the Keynote Speaker
Ada D. Stewart, MD, FAAFP, is a board-certified family physician. Dr. Stewart practices at the Eau Claire Cooperative Health Centers in Columbia, South Carolina, where she serves as lead provider and HIV specialist.
As a member of the AAFP Board of Directors, Dr. Stewart serves as board liaison to the AAFP Commission on Governmental Advocacy and AAFP Foundation. She has been a member of the AAFP Commission on Health of the Public and Science, and is past chair of the Commission’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Advisory Committee. Dr. Stewart was convener for the AAFP National Conference of Special Constituencies in 2010, and New Physician delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates in 2004. She is also active in the American Medical Association, and has served as AAFP delegate to the AMA Resident and Fellow Section, and was chair of the AMA Minority Affairs Consortium Governing Council. Dr. Stewart has served in numerous leadership positions in her state chapter, including terms as President and Board Chair.
Dr. Stewart is certified in HIV care and is a member of the American Academy of HIV Medicine. This year, Stewart was appointed by DHHS Secretary Azar to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. She is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, the National Medical Association, and the American Women’s Medical Association. In 2017, she was recognized for her work in hepatitis C treatment and prevention by the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council.
Dr. Stewart was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She has dedicated her career to ensuring that low-income and uninsured families have access to high-quality healthcare. She began her career as a National Health Service Corps scholar, caring for patients in rural South Carolina. She continues to work with underserved communities in both rural and urban settings.
After the events of 9/11, Dr. Stewart enlisted in the US Army Reserve and holds the rank of colonel. She is a preceptor for nurse practitioners, residents, and medical students, and has received numerous awards, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Stewart earned her BS degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University, and her medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio. She completed her family medicine residency training at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.
